Special Notes (2015)
Dear Mah Jong Club,
Yes, I think your ABC Mah-Jong song is perfect! I hope it helps many people learn our wonderful game.
I've been playing since I was old enough to sit on a chair and see the table top. Mah-Jong is an old family game for me. My Great Grandmother learned the game on a tour to Italy around 1920. Being a popular political couple, my Great Grandparents returned to the Chicago area and taught their friends including Frank Lloyd Wright the famous Architect.
Yes, I'm in Southwest Missouri. My town is Springfield Mo. It was my Chicago family who first propped me up on Chicago phone books to learn the game.
As for boxes, I would like to find a beautiful reproduction of an ivory inlaid abalone inlaid box like older members of my family have. I'm lucky enough to have remarkably beautiful boards inlaid with semi precious gems and abalone sea shell. My tiles are old bone on bamboo from the late 1920's. But, my box is in tatters! I'm looking for a box with the same type of period style as other items in my set.
I've been to China and played with a group of very serious fellow ladies. However, it wasn't until I was aboard a cruise going down the old Yangsee River that I saw what a loud, shouting, rather ugly group of river men playing the gambling version of the game. Those men had knives and I suspect they were not for cleaning fish. I understand China and it's desire to control those types of games. We are blessed to self control in the U.S.A.
I enjoy your newsletters very much. (2015)

julia2okla@gmail.com[2015 Hey Missouri Mah Jongg players! I found your site + email addresses online & am hoping you've all found groups to play with and are growing our game! I play Mah Jongg with friends in Bartlesville Oklahoma, and we find it very hard to locate others in the "area." Kansas City is a short (3 hour) trip from here. We'd gladly travel North to play in mini-tourneys, and invite you to the ones we host. We recently had 28 participants in a single day tourney, and it was super fun. Additionally, some of us recently traveled to Chicago for the "Mah Jongg Madness" tournament. We traveled through KC en route and wondered what kind of MJ groups were there and in St. Louis. I see quite a bit online in Johnson County about 50 Plus play? Let me know if you are all actively playing and who we can contact about mini-tourneys.]

Special Notes (March 27, 2013).
Dear Sirs:
I am emailing from a London-based independent television production company called Wag TV. We produce a series for the Discovery Channel called How Do They Do It?, which looks at the manufacture of some of the world's most amazing products. We are currently producing our 10th series.
One of the stories we are filming is on the manufacture of Mahjong sets. We have a crew out in China at the moment filming this, but we would like to include a few shots of Mahjong being played elsewhere in the world as well. As it happens we have a crew due to film in the USA (around Boston and then up into Maine) in about two weeks' time, and I was wondering if you might be able to recommend any local Mahjong tournaments, clubs or societies in the region who might be willing to play a game on camera.
Below is a little more information about the show:
How Do They Do It? is one of the world's most popular technology magazine shows and is broadcast across the world to over 1.25 billion Discovery Channel subscribers. In previous series we have filmed stories about how NASA train astronauts, how 'time' is measured, how nuclear power works, how sea sponges are collected, how Bentleys are made, and how money is printed. We have also filmed everything from piano production with Steinway to silver mining in Mexico. More information about How Do They Do It? can be found here: http://science.discovery.com/tv/how-do-they-do-it/
Thank you for your time and I hope this is of interest. If you would like any more information please do not hesitate to contact me.
Many thanks, www.wagtv.com
Wonderful news, I'm glad Mahjong is getting some t.v. time. I think your choices of location are a bit unusual. Most Mahjong games are played in homes and churches most often. Tournaments and retirement home play is more commercial based. Wouldn't it be nice to show a home based game and one commercial based game? That way, both sides gain a little exposure. When my family gathers, we all still play the game my Great-Great Grandmother was so crazy about in the 1920's. Many families still play Wright Patterson rules just like they always have done. vjmathis April 2013.

St. Louis, Mo 63124 [witsendsally@gmail.com] Am interested in finding a place or places in st, louis where I can find old or oldish either Mah Jong or Mah Jong sets. Thank you. Sally

Westnest2@charter.net[My name is Lydia. I play Mah Jongg in Southern Illinois with a group of about 15 active players. A Mah Jongg director from New York was nice enough to do a tournament for us right here in Centralia, Illinois, in October, 2013. She also has two or three in Florida every Spring. She wants to do a tournament in St. Louis, MO, area and asked me to try to find the venue of the last tournament in St. Louis. Was it in the 1980's? Do you know where the last St. Louis tournament was held? ]
